10 Fantastic Drag and Drop Page Builders for WordPress Worth Checking Out

There’s been an explosion of WordPress page builders in recent months, so many in fact it’s hard to know where to begin.

There are front-end builders, backend builders. And what’s the difference between a page builder and a theme builder? Many themes are also available now with built-in builders.

To help you get your head around what’s out there, I’ve put together 10 of the best front-end and backend page builder plugins available.

It’s important to note these are page builder plugins, not theme builders. Chris Knowles offers a clear explanation of the difference between page and theme builders as part of his series on WordPress Theme Builders.

Some page builders didn’t make the cut. Some hadn’t been updated in more than a year and others just didn’t match the functionality and user experience offered by the plugins below.

We reviewed VelocityPage earlier this week and found the drag-and-drop page builder, headed by WordPress core developer Mark Jaquith, didn’t quite live up to all the hype.

Still, it’s a robust product with a lot of potential. Check out Chris Knowles review for a comprehensive look at the plugin.

FastLine offers front-end drag-and-drop experience that comes with various pre-built layouts.

Adding and editing elements on a page is fast and intuitive. A slide out window, much like the WordPress Theme Customizer, provides an easy way to search for new elements to add to a page, like galleries, buttons and forms.

You can also control row layouts and widgets from within the page builder.

Page Builder by SiteOrigin


Cost: Free

SiteOrigin’s backend builder lets you build pages using widgets as building blocks you can drag-and-drop into a responsive layout.

It works with your existing widgets and adds it own for galleries, images, self-hosted video and posts, as well as buttons, call to action, lists and price boxes.

IG Page Builder


Cost: Free, with upgrades available

IG Page Builder is a simple and straightforward backend drag-and-drop tool that offers responsive layouts.

It works with both posts and pages and includes full page elements, widget support, built-in shortcodes and other options that provide unlimited styling variations.

This plugin also has a live preview mode, which saves time switching back and forth between windows.

Aqua Page Builder


Cost: Free

Aqua Page Builder lets you create an unlimited number of template variations using drag-and-drop similar to the Widgets interface.

This backend plugin is fairly basic but also intuitive and easy to use.

Visual Composer


Cost: $30

Visual Composer is a popular plugin included with many themes for sale at Themeforest.

It offers a fluid front-end editing experience without a learning curve so you can quickly create responsive page layouts.

Features include 40+ content elements out-of-the box for complex layouts, a built-in “skin builder” for colors.

MotoPress Content Editor


Cost: Licenses start at $29 a year

MotoPress offers easy to use front-end and backend editing. The plugin adds a “MotoPress Content Editor” button to the Page Editor so you can easily switch between front-end and backend editing.

Features include support for custom post types, WPML compatibility, extend with your own shortcodes and built-in elements like sliders and galleries for complex layouts.

Live Composer


Cost: Licenses start at $25

Live Composer offers a fluid front-end editing experience using modules you can drag-and-drop from a pane at the bottom of the page.

Easily add images and galleries, style your text and other elements, add new rows and create columns for your layouts.

Drag and Drop Builder Plugin


Cost: Free

Elegant Themes’ backend page builder is pretty basic. It lets you add, arrange and re-size elements on your page.

The builder appears below the regular text editor when you add a new page or post, and you can add modules, and create columns, sliders, tabs, buttons, boxes and other elements.

Themify Builder


Cost: $49

Themify’s drag-and-drop builder for WordPress offers front-end editing with responsive grid layouts.

This page builder comes with any Themify theme to get you started. It also comes with pre-built layouts and color schemes and support shortcodes.
